We visited the Basilica and a nearby church, still open for mass every day. We roamed the back alleys and checked out many of the little shops. TBG is going crazy with all the masks, but I have him holding off until after our mask class on Saturday.
We were starting to feel peckish about 11:30 and were drawn into a small café, Al Gallo de Oro, the Golden Rooster. As it was early, we were one of three parties, but that didn’t distract from the food. We started with a delighted seafood salad, with shrimp and octopus, then TBG had lasagna with a Bolognese sauce and I had tortellini with prosciutto in a creamy parmesan sauce. We waddled out of there and headed back to the hotel. The walk helped settle the food, thankfully.
A nice nap and a lazy couple of hours gave us the impetus to set out once again. We wandered aimless, getting happily lost in the back streets and alleys of Venice and ended up at the Rialto. Along the way, we did a bit of shopping and even stopped at the Museo de Musica, honoring Antonio Vivaldi. According to what I read, it was a church that he has preached in, but he had to give up the ministry because his asthma made it difficult for him to deliver sermons. However, that gave way to his love of music – happily for me as he’s one of my favorite composers.
Tired, we decided to head home. TBG wanted to talk a vaparetto, but they still weren’t running. This we didn’t discover until we’d waited in line for nearly thirty minutes.
That’s when we discovered that St. Mark’s was a mere seven minutes from where we were. So we started walking and they were right, more or less. As we crossed the plaza, a man stopped and got TBG to buy me roses. They are quite lovely.
Back at the hotel, we decided to pay another visit to De Pici only this time we had reservations and we dressed. It was another success. I started with a fantastic Pasta Fagioli and scampi soup and TBG had a Caprice salad. I decided to try the sole, while TBG had beef. We were, again, thrilled with our choices. Even though we didn’t have room, TBG ordered a pear and pineapple meringue with gingerbread ice cream. Yeah, it was incredible.
After that, we again waddled back to our room and read before it was time for a lights out. It was to be a more restless night than the one before, but I expected that after a two-hour nap, but also my boss woke me up with a text. *yay* They miss me.
